About Free to Be Me Speech Therapy

Free to Be Me Speech Therapy is dedicated to providing neurodiversity affirming speech therapy services for paediatric and adult clients in the inner suburbs of Melbourne. Our in-person mobile services and Telehealth options make accessing therapy convenient for our clients. We specialise in AAC, gestalt language processing and supporting Autistic and ADHD individuals as well as their families and support networks.

Specialised Areas of Practice

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to the methods and tools used to help individuals with speech or language difficulties communicate more effectively. AAC includes a wide range of solutions, from picture boards and sign language to advanced speech-generating devices and mobile apps. These tools support and enhance communication, allowing users to express their thoughts, needs, and ideas more freely. AAC empowers individuals to connect with others, improving their quality of life and fostering greater independence.

Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) is a form of language development where individuals naturally learn language in chunks rather than word by word. This method recognises that some people, who are often but not always Autistic, grasp and use whole phrases or sentences as single units of meaning. By understanding and leveraging this holistic way of processing language, therapists and educators can better support language development, helping individuals break down these chunks into smaller, more manageable parts to build flexible, meaningful communication skills. GLP fosters effective and personalised language learning, enhancing overall communication abilities.

Neurodiversity (ND) is the concept that neurological differences, such as Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others, are natural variations of the human brain. Embracing neurodiversity means recognising and valuing these differences as part of the rich tapestry of human experience. This perspective promotes acceptance and inclusion, encouraging society to accommodate diverse ways of thinking and learning.
